Hello
I’m Caroline
I am a general psychologist with a passion for EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing) therapy and the treatment of stress and trauma-related conditions. Whilst I have been registered as a psychologist since 2011, I’ve had experience with counselling roles since 2002. I’ve always gravitated towards the treatment of stress responses and exposure to trauma. I find the work to be rewarding as well as positively challenging to my skills and abilities.
As a psychologist, I have worked for 11 years experience across private practice, business and the non-government sector.
Prior to working as a psychologist, I worked as a trauma therapist within the indigenous mental health sector.
After this I became a psychologist, and worked as a subcontractor at a GP practice, at a psychologist practice, and in private practice for various funded client programs.
In the last 4 years, I have worked predominantly with clients referred from the defence force, ambulance or police.
My therapeutic style
My therapeutic style as a psychologist is grounded, so that the process is understood by you. Each client’s journey is unique and you will be dealt with as an individual.
Compassion, empathy and feeling understood are central to my therapy, as well as not feeling judged.
I am warm and at the same time I will challenge you to reach the goals that you set for yourself. I will guide, but will not do the work for you, that part is your journey.
I will offer a grounded and centred approach, which is both compassionate and direct. I am concrete and therefore will offer some reflections and difficult truths if I believe it will promote growth in your session. You can rely on me to be empathic and honest. And along the way, we will have some laughs. Sometimes we need to have a good laugh to let something unhelpful go. As much as I’m a professional, I am a human and not ashamed of being so.
My main techniques
The main techniques which I use are EMDR and Ego State Therapy, as they are what I consider to be the most effective techniques available.
I am not a therapist who focuses sessions on education and skills development specifically.
However, through the process of EMDR and Ego State Therapy, clients develop the skills to reduce their emotional reactivity and subsequently deal with situations in a better manner (respond not react). I love watching the growth that occurs for clients via EMDR and Ego State Therapy, it’s most satisfying for me as a therapist.
It never ceases to amaze me how resilient the human spirit can be and it is this that motivates me to do what I do. Trauma therapy is not easy, but the result are often enlightening, as you learn to cope with what happened and be less triggered.
